More rare than gold itself, Fordite, the Motor City agate is extinct.  The agate was formed by the overspray and buildup of early enamel paint processes from the automobile plants. Repeated baking hardened the paint into smooth layers. Over the course of time, chunks were broken off and saved.  When a piece was carved it exposed the layering, hence the agate got its name. Today, pieces of the gem are used for jewelry. We wonder if an enthusiast with a keen eye could possibly identify the auto manufacturer and production year based on the colors in the piece. As handsome as the pieces are, matching doesn't matter. Cabochon cut. Here is a great gift with a neat history.
